The University of North Texas Jazz Singers is the premier vocal jazz ensemble within the Division of Jazz Studies at the College of Music. Under the direction of Jennifer Barnes, the group features fourteen vocalists and a five-piece rhythm section performing a challenging and diverse repertoire, including works by current students, alumni, and faculty. They have appeared at major conferences such as the Jazz Education Network, International Association for Jazz Education, and American Choral Directors Association, and have earned a DownBeat Student Music Award in thirteen of the past fourteen years. Their six albums are available on major streaming platforms, including their latest release, Too Darn Hot! (2025).

Jazz voice majors at UNT participate in multiple ensembles while studying solo jazz singing, songwriting, pedagogy, improvisation, theory, arranging, and jazz history. Students also perform in groups such as Jazz Chamber Ensembles, the Latin Jazz Lab Band, Zebras, Brazilian Ensemble, and the Lab Bands. Alumni have gone on to receive major honors, including Grammy nominations, and have built careers as performers, educators, and composers.

In addition to directing the Jazz Singers, Barnes is an acclaimed vocalist, educator, and arranger. She has led award-winning ensembles at eight universities, guest conducted in sixteen states, and received the DownBeat Jazz Education Achievement Award. As a performer, she has contributed to projects including World of Warcraft, Wall-E, Enchanted, Ice Age, and Glee, and is an active member of leading professional organizations in music and entertainment.
